With the entire category and history of "pop" music available I admit to being slightly disappointed. Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" is hard to sing and the video sadly reminded us of how healthy and beautiful she used to look before falling victim to drug use. It was decent, but the results vary by user. But the quality of the song list is the real question here. The music videos are fun to make but quickly get a little repetitive if you make a few attempts to polish a song.ĪUDIO: The sound is as crisp and clear as the original recordings. There isn't anything innovative here but innovation isn't needed. #SINGSTAR SONGS POP PS2#Those wishing to be the audio and visual stars can use the "EyeToy" USB camera for the PS2 and then watch themselves sing as well. The visual system works great, showcasing the original performer but still helping the karaoke candidate along. GRAPHICS: This non-traditional game features the same videos you might watch on MTV, with the lyrics framed below the picture and the sing-along guides on screen that help singers see if they are missing notes sharp or flat and if their rhythm is off. #SINGSTAR SONGS POP TRIAL#The trial party received high marks across the board. Singing head-to-head was fun and changing to "pass the mic," when the game forces everybody on a team to participate on a single song is a fun feature. The variety of team options really added to the fun of the game and the longevity of it. Performances can be recorded and to really hear a performance, that is the best - and sometimes cringe inducing - way. The original vocals are still part of the audio experience, which can be slightly distracting for some and serve as a needed crutch for others. Without a doubt, this is a good time even for "non-singers" willing to give it a try. On the easy setting the game is quite forgiving, granting singers points if they are even close in pitch. Indeed, in the age of "American Idol," the game opens vocal performances to anybody with enough guts to attempt it. The game can be enjoyed by up to eight players and makes singing about as easy as can be. The mics look and feel well-made and durable. Owners of previous versions can buy only the game with its 30 new songs. The package we tried featured two color-coded microphones and a USB converter that are required to play and can be purchased with the game. It compensates for the karaoke revolution line of games in this country. The "SingStar" for the PS2 has been in Europe for several releases but this is only the second edition in the United States. People may practice karaoke at home, but real performances happen socially. While it isn't difficult to imagine somebody singing solo to test out their pipes, the whole appeal of a singing game is to do it with others. GAMEPLAY: The only way to try out a game like this is in a party setting. "Expandable song library: Disc swap feature keeps the party rocking as different 'SingStar™' discs can be quickly changed." - From THE REVIEW "Multiple gameplay modes, including Solo, Freestyle, Pass the Mic, Battle and Duet, create a highly interactive social experience. Includes 'EyeToy®' USB camera compatibility: players can see themselves singing in place of the artist's video. "Available as a standalone or bundled with two custom, high-quality microphones and the 'SingStar™' USB converter. "With custom microphones in hand, singers perform along to 30 songs and videos from Top 40 artists such as Rihanna, All American Rejects, Cyndi Lauper, Gorillaz, Snow Patrol, U2 and more, turning your living room into the pop concert of the year. "Featuring a chart-topping lineup of today's best artists, songs and videos, 'SingStar™ Pop' is the second release in PlayStation 2's newest interactive singing franchise.
